Brief

Continuing their family’s mission of tuxum-tun-um (returning home) by rematriating and restoring the Snake River, KHIMSTONIK’s mission is to create opportunities for intergenerational healing and rematriation along ancestral homelands through land return, Traditional Ecological Knowledge activities, and restoration work. KHIMSTONIK is named after Executive Director, Ione I. Jones’, Kuthla (grandmother). Khimstonik was one of the many families displaced from her home by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to make way for one of the four lower Snake River dams. This work brings intergenerational healing from deep and ongoing colonial injustices by building a community of care for the River and the next generation of River Keepers.

Land Clinic contributes to this work through general legal strategy, support for land returns and canoe journeys within cultural context, navigating government relations, relationship memorialization, reparative mapmaking, and storytelling.
